Jack-O-Lantern Life
By Amanda Stephan
It is night and day with you
Your plump face
And toothless smile
Make me laugh
We gaze at each other
And giggle playfully together
But when night comes
You are no longer a friend
You stare painfully into the darkness
An eerie silence rings
From your cold glowing eyes
The rainbow of leaves falls beside you
But you are not bothered
Your gaze is never broken
And your sarcastic grin
Is never hidden
Until you grow old
And your bright face
Turns pale
Your palyfulness and eeriness
Wither away
You are dormant
Looking at me, thin and frail
For sympathy but
You get nothing.
Unforgettable 911
Symphonic conversation and laughter
Ring sweetly over the crowded streets
And the comforting motion of daily routines
Pour sporadically into the city
A mixture of colors, languages, and dreams
Blend precisely into a painting
One that represents the American culture
At the heights of its benefits
A city of many wonders
Shared by all; black & white
Rich & poor, Hopeless & Hopeful
Working together to neutralize conflict
In a nation of success & power
The motion of daily routines
Is suddenly interrupted
Harmony & peace
Quickly transfer to
Panic & despair; Cries & screams
Echo in the streets
Frantic bodies & heroes
Scramble in every direction
A nation once tied together
By an intricate system of normality
Now weaved together by a goal
To save their fellow Americans
And to fight the evil
That works against them

Broken Defenses
By: Amanda Stephan
A collection of demented minds
Weak and Withered
Weaved together into one
Because of one common goal
A goal so selfish
It is sickening to the world around
The goal to save one’s self
No matter the effects
So determined to succeed
They knock down friends
As if they were leading a crusade
Lying and deceiving guilt free
They pounce around boasting
All they have, all of which
They do not deserve
The good people are stepped on
Their single motive
Slowly disintegrates all they have
Until they have nothing
Their morals and personality
Ripped away in attempt to
Meet their egotistical goal
Soon they start in on each other
All others have forgotten them
What they fought to protect
Becomes their enemy
Their world becomes
A never ending battleground
Arguments and harsh words
Fire from their self centered lips
Like bullets from a pistol
They look back at what
They once had
Although it is beautiful
The goal still applies
They fight alone now
With nothing to blame their losses
Although all others have lost
They have still loved
And for that they are happy
