Winterim Sequel in the Works

Success from UW-WC's first Winterim session is leading the school to offer classes again next year.

Seventy-five students took the initiative to earn three credits in three weeks by enrolling in the Winterim courses run from Jan. 2 -19. The classes ran Monday through Thursday for three hours, 45 minutes. Each credit cost $177.83.

One of the four courses, political science, originally offered was cut due to low enrollment. The three classes held were anthropology 350, communications 103 and philosophy 243.

"Anytime the school offers students the opportunity to take additional credits is great because it only helps them progress towards getting their associates or bachelors degree," said student Senator Anthony Dewees of the Student Government at UW-WC.

Dewees didn't take any Winterim courses, but he already plans on taking full advantage of the chance to hasten his degree and enroll in microbiology this summer, set up in a similar accelerated format.

While the courses aren't chosen for next Winterim, the Curriculum Committee will get together and release information in October for students to start enrolling again.

The campus was pleased with the feedback, said Prof. Roger Peterson, and plans on continuing the Winterim mid-term courses over the next few years. Different courses may be offered next Winterim.
