UWWC Blood Drive

It was another successful Blood Drive, hosted by UW-WC Feb. 21, from 9 a.m to 2 p.m.

Donations were up compared with the last UW-WC blood drive. 54 people attempted to donate, with 44 whole units collected. A number of things could happen where someone would not be able to donate such as not waiting enough from the last time you donated, which can only be once every 56 days.

Another frequent reason to get turned away is a low iron level. According to www.givelife.org, iron levels fluctuate daily and are affected by what you eat.

Check the eligibility requirements to see if you may be eligible to donate. A "mini-physical" is given to all potential donors to ensure they are healthy enough to donate. You must be in good health, be at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds. To check if you are eligible before donating blood you are required to pass a physical, and health history review.

Debbie Butschlick, the Blood drive Coordinator for the school, says they are fairly easy to put together and pretty self supporting. This time some community members from the West Bend Chapter, Sue Kowlhey, Sharon Ellefson, and Jack Timmer helped out.

If you missed donating blood, or did not meet the requirements this time you can you can call 1-800 GIVELIFE or visit the American Red Cross Blood Donation website to sign up to donate in a blood drive in your area.

So why not take the time to come donate? It's safe, simple, and saves lives.
