The Sound and the Fury

Free America

Jessica Rust

In a day's time a baby is born.
Parents overjoyed.
There wallets are bare and necessities
are a must. They need food, diapers, and clothing.
As the child grows, so does it's needs.
Shoes, sippie cups, Gerber jars, and tons of toys.
As a toddler, they won't stop their tantrum
Until they've got what they want.
Then it's the action figure or the latest primped Barbie.
Five years, they need to go to school, books, crayons, paper, folders, and little lunchables.
They make best friends and have show and tell. They trade their toys for cooler toy experience. A bike with training wheels, at least seventy five dollars.
Eleven years old, wants to join school sports, fifty dollars for each one: basketball, cheerleading, dance, and football.
Fourteen years old, need I say Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap, and Banana Republic.
Every weekend spent at the skating rink, with blades that could kill.
Sixteen, brand new car, insurance.
New cell phone plan for forty-five bucks a month. A monthly
Internet fee with basic cable, two-hundred dollars a month.
And lets not forget food.
The very essence of an adult lifestyle.
The adult may be able to free to chose, but the choices will cost 'em his whole life.

Mafia

Xita Beauregarde

Amber flames inside the circle
Each person sitting in a lawn chair
The judge passes out the cards
A combination of: two aces, one king, one queen and two jacks.
Each person takes a quick peek at their card
Then they turn the card face-down.
Everyone closes their eyes and
Puts their head down.
The judge asks the aces aka-the Mafia
to wake up, and then asks them
who do you want to kill in the group. They quietly point to
Lucy. Then the mafia closes there eyes and
Goes back to bed.
The judge asks the king to arise, and then asks
Who do you want to know about? So the king can figure out who the mafia is.
the king points to Charlie.
The judge shakes his head yes and then the king nods his head in understanding.
The king closes his eyes and goes back to bed.
The judge asks the Queen to arise, and asks her who she wants to save,
she points to Schroeder, and the judge tells the queen to go to bed.
Next the judge asks the jacks to arise aka- the townsmen. They do not have important role like the others,
but together they know between themselves that they are not the Mafia. They must work together to find the Mafia along with the others.

The judge then tells everyone in the group to arise. Then explains that poor Lucy was in the house and she was minding her own business. Then she tripped over a football and then hit her head on the floor causing her to have hemorrhage to the brain. She eventually laid there for ten minutes then died.

The judge looks at each and everyone and asks, "So who do believe is the Mafia?" As each person contemplates their prediction, the judge goes around and tallies the votes. Lucy cannot cast her vote because she is dead.

This is the ballot:
Schroeder: Charlie
Charlie: Snoopy
Snoopy: Linus
Linus: Snoopy
Peppermint Pattie:Snoopy

The judge then exclaims: Snoopy it is! Then Snoopy goes on trial and gives his testimony, "I could not have done it because I tried to save Lucy, but obviously she had died." The group then thinks about his claim and then the judge takes another vote.

Even though Snoopy is on trial he can still vote and try to convince the audience against him.

Schroeder: Charlie
Charlie: Snoopy
Snoopy: Linus
Peppermint Patty: Snoopy
Linus: Snoopy

The judge then makes his verdict, Snoopy you are now dead and you shall not be able to vote anymore. Snoopy shows everyone his card that he is not the Mafia but is a townsman. The judge then says, "The Mafia has won again, we must find them." The group then thinks about what happen then votes again to put someone else on trial.

Charlie: Schroeder
Schroeder: Charlie
Linus: Schroeder
Peppermint Patty: Schroeder

The judge then exclaims: Schroeder it is! Then Schroeder goes on trial and gives his testimony, "It is Charlie that did because he cannot stand to be by Lucy more than ten seconds?" Linus ,Charlie, and Peppermint Patty make their decisions and Schroeder sticks to his guns.

Charlie: Schroeder
Schroeder: Charlie
Lunis: Schroeder
Peppermint Patty: Schroeder

The Judge then makes his verdict, Schroeder, you are now dead and you shall not be able to vote anymore. Schroeder shows the group his card and it's a king. The judge then concludes that the Mafia then kills off Linus, and reign forever. Who is the Mafia?

White Box

Norma cramed into the kitchen after her abdomen growled hungry,
She came closer to a cold machine that contained produce,
Cheese, meat, and condiments. Searching over and under
The leftover pile. All she wanted was something to munch
On, between the containers and plastic cartons she checked
To see if the last slice of pizza and can of cola was still there, refreshing over ice.

No luck, as her hand jerked open the freezier, ice
Chips flew out. She wanted the Hungarian
Specialty ice cream, filled with checkered
Chocolate stripes. But that was no good either, after three months, freezer burn produced
Nasty bitter tasting cream. It was 12:02 a.m., and Norma had the munchies,
The kind that only certain foods can classify under.

Cottage cheese, turkey sandwiches, meatloaf all underneath
A pile of molded rubbish. It would be nice
If the green slime wasn't munched
Over the cheese, or at least what was left of it. Hungriness
Burned acid in her stomach, producing
Fluid that could rip through anything. Checking-

Everywhere, she misplaced her weekly check
That could buy all the food under
The sun. She strolls into the produce
Isle where, all the broccoli is covered in ice
Because the temperatures are low. Hungary
Little children in New Orleans, they aren't asking for much.

She puts in a couple of cans that munch
Up, on accidentally. A broken can won't be checked
Its, just as good. Whenever people shop they are always hungry
For fatty foods, chips and dips, steaks cooked under
The broiler, fries deep fried in reused oil, ice
Cream in 50 different flavors, producing-

Addiction. What better way to produce
Gum disease cavities ,that munchle
Up and grind ice
To chip away your rotten teeth. Dentist checking
With a light probe over and under
Each canal. Not hungry-

Anymore. shakes never produce anything close to hungry,
Munchies with chips and salsa the shelve checking
For the dust bunnies frozen under the ice ring.

The Best Summer

Jessica rust

It was 7 a.m. and I was awake to enjoy
My steamed roast of toffee beans
on my front porch
Rays of tokens were thrown
On my skin and slapped me hard.
My luggage was trained well, sitting
Next to door waiting for my command.
The wheels did not collapsed and
Kept its positive firm.

Thoughts were takin' captive
And fog let go and lifted.
Arm in hand each particle
Prescribed was filled and carrying
Each bag. Got on my plain and
Caught on the bus, filled with sleepy
People . arriving to my destination, my perceived
Thoughts vanished. It was made right and forever
Perminate in my mind.

Natives under 12, ran into arms
Showed me what "visitor " meant.
Endless nights of play time and reading
Story books. Endless mornings of warm milk
And laughter. Construction and wet cement
Stained on his clothes. Sunburns and dog bites
Distracted those men. But when it came to good byes
Only arms and teeth were used.

Some children knew our language
Without us even speaking a word.
They showed us hope and dreams
That would become reality only after
Perseverance. When our group had returned
To land of pride, the sun shined deeper
Into our eyes.
