It's that time of year again
More empty chairs join classes
The cool breeze has finally faded away while nice summer weather is starting to take its place. Let's face it; the last place you want to be is class.
So comes an interesting time for teachers because this is when they get to hear all the excuses. Usually students try anything including, computer problems, health problems, and deaths in the family.
English teacher Anne Widmayer recalls a family death excuse.
"One student actually tried to persuade me that both of his grandparents had died inconveniently around the due dates for two of my papers," she said.
Other students have come up with some tall tales, too, like Freshman Lauren Walls.
"I once told my teacher that my car got broken into and that's why I was late for class. I was pretty convincing," she said.
Some students choose not to show up to class at all, which can be devastating to grades. Or students will try to get teachers to have class outside. However, students don't realize why teachers cannot have their classes outside.
"It is actually very loud outside, much louder than in a classroom, so it is virtually impossible to have a discussion without everyone shouting," said Widmayer.
Arriving late and leaving early are also problems during the nicer weather months. Students will always try to get professors into letting them out early by starting the packing-up routine before class is actually over
"As the semester gets busier, I have more students telling me that they need to leave class early because they have this or that to do," said Widmayer, "I tell them they should either stay in class the whole time or not show up at all because leaving early is distracting and rude."
Students should realize that this is the time of the year to buckle down. Luckily, one thing that hasn't declined is student's homework.
"Students are realizing that they have to do good work so they receive a decent grade at the end of the course," said Widmayer.
