UW-WC has recently expanded the Learning Center. Now students can get help on more than just English and math. Chemistry and physics help is available.

The usage of the lab seems to be lower than anticipated. On Jan. 19, five people used the lab between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

"I've had one person come in for physics help, I think that's because there are more math classes than physics classes. This is also the first semester for physics to be added to the learning center, and I don't think people know about it yet," said Emmer a sophomore at UW-WC.

Students study in the new learning center

Robin Fortney is a tutor in chemistry and math. She hasn't seen an increase in traffic in the Learning Center either.

"People don't know that they can get help in physics and chemistry, too. They think that they can only get math and English help here" said Fortney.

Help with chemistry is Fortney's forte. Although she hasn't seen a lot of students coming in for chemistry help, Fortney still enjoys tutoring others.

"It gives me a good opportunity to help people and help myself, I can review my own homework for better understanding," said Fortney.

The question of the need for the new "Learning Center" was answered by a survey sent to the student body. The survey showed math and science were the greatest areas of need.

Needing additional help with math, Billy Sulicz, doesn't think the new Learning Center is adding up.

"They should have more math help," said Sulicz. "Last semester they had more math tutors and I used it every day last year. I've hardly used it this year. Math tutors aren't available anymore."

Laurie Kuehn, Student Services Advisor/ Learning Center coordinator, is working on fulfilling the needs of the students for a learning center.

"We are the only UW campus that does not have a learning center," said Kuehn. "We wanted to combine all the services that we offer into one space."

While starting from scratch, Kuehn thinks one of the biggest hurdles is advertising. Having a learning center and having people use a learning center are two different things.

"Students need to know that the Learning Center is not only a place to be tutored, but a spot for students to study together, with or without a tutor" said Kuehn.
