Girls Hoops Team Making Strides

UW-WC women's basketball coach Russell Thull took over the women's program this season with the goal of finishing above .500 and making the conference tournament. With the regular season over, the team is able to say it achieved the latter.

The Lady Wildcats were able to pull out a victory against UW-Marinette on Feb. 10, giving them control of the fourth and final spot for the conference tournament.

Thull is proud of his team's accomplishments. The 8-8 record does not indicate how close some of the games were.

"We have lost three games by a combined six points and we have been in a few games that came down to the last few minutes. We are a very young team that does not have a lot of experience and we are still learning how to win," he said.

Thull's two captains have stepped up to lead the team this season.

Amber Held, a returning all-conference player, is averaging 16 points per game and even more impressively leads the state with 14 rebounds per game.

The team's other captain, Dana Konop, missed the first half of the season because of a severe ankle injury, but made an immediate impact as soon as she returned, averaging about 14 points and 10 rebounds per game.

"I am really impressed with the dedication of all my players. They have really set the standard to what I will expect from my players in years to come," Thull said.
