Chemistry Week

October 10, 2006

Chemistry Week at UW-Washington County

UW-Washington County is making plans to celebrate National Chemistry Week, from October 23 to 27, 2006.  This year’s theme is “Your Home: It’s All Built on Chemistry.”  Today’s homes are all built on chemistry – in the materials used to construct them.  For example, in the garage, materials include brick, paint, concrete; in the kitchen (cabinets, countertops, flooring, fire extinguisher), and in the bathroom (pipes, fiberglass, porcelain, grout and caulk), etc. The UW-WC Chemistry Department and the Science and Math Club are sponsoring the following events:

All Week (October 23-27):

Student Poster Exhibit and Display: More than 45 students are researching different chemical elements and compounds that are part of their homes.  They will present their findings in a variety of posters and displays in the science building, located next to the chemistry labs on the second floor of the Collins Science wing.

Wednesday October 25, Noon, room 228: Science and Math Club Seminar titled “Rubber and Urethane materials in the home.”  The guest speaker is Mr. Tony Lukas, Chemist, Molded Dimensions, Inc., Port Washington, Wisconsin.

These activities are open to the public.  Everyone is welcome to attend and explore where and how chemistry can be located around their own homes!

For more information, contact Professor Mohamed Ayoub, Associate Professor of Chemistry, at 262-335-5234.

The best start for the life you want.
