Financial Aid

UW-Washington County offers a comprehensive student financial aid program that includes all major federal and state aid funds. It's important to apply early because many of these sources have limited funds.  All application materials should be submitted as soon after January 1 as possible for the academic year beginning the following September. If possible, complete your federal tax return prior to submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The FAFSA form can be completed online or paper forms are available from Student Services or your high school. Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA electronically as paper forms take longer to process. Applicants who have submitted all necessary forms by April 15 are given funding priority.
Note: You must reapply for financial aid each year.

Steps for applying for financial aid:
  • Apply as soon as possible after January 1 for the academic year beginning the following September.  Applicants who have submitted all necessary forms by April 15 will be given funding priority.
  • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which is available electronically though the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov .  You can apply from home or from campus.  The FAFSA on-line applications are processed more quickly than paper applications and have fewer errors.
You will need to apply for a pin number to sign your FAFSA electronically.

OR

  • Complete a paper FAFSA.  These are available in the campus Student Services Office or in your local high school guidance office.  Be sure to sign the signature page before mailing the FAFSA form to the federal processor.
  • A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to you either through the mail or the Internet.  The SAR lists information you reported on your FAFSA and will tell you your EFC (Expected Family Contribution).  It is important to review your SAR to make sure all of your information is correct and that the college you choose is listed.  Make any necessary changes.
  • Apply for admission and be admitted.
  • Your EFC, along with the rest of your FAFSA information, is made available to the school you listed on the FAFSA.  The school uses your EFC to prepare a financial aid package to help you meet your financial need.  Financial aid is the difference between your EFC and your school’s cost of attendance as determined by the school.
  • An award letter will be generated listing any financial aid you are eligible to receive.

To be eligible for financial aid, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a United States citizen or a permanent resident of the U.S. (International students are not eligible for aid.)
  • Carry at least six credits per semester. Exceptions may be made to the six-credit rule for PELL Grant funding.
  • Demonstrate financial need for most types of aid.  There are some exceptions to this rule. See the section on types of aid for more details.
  • Not have defaulted on any educational loan or owe a repayment on any previous federal grant provided by any post secondary institution.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as outlined in the UW Colleges catalog.

 Financial Aid Night Presentations:

UW-WC advisors present information on financial aid at area high schools each year. Community residents are welcome to attend any of these presentations. They provide a good source of current and important information for college bound students and their parents. Admission is free and no reservations are necessary.

For a schedule of presentations at local high schools, phone Student Services (262-335-5201).
