International Studies

The International Studies Certificate (ISC) program in the UW Colleges presents an exciting opportunity for Wisconsin college students to broaden their horizons and their understanding of our increasingly interdependent global society.

The program introduces freshman and sophomore level college students to 20th and 21st century global studies. Students take a diverse set of courses with a worldview, which helps students broaden their perspectives and gain an appreciation and awareness of the global community.

Students may use the International Studies Certificate program to:

  • Give cohesion to their electives within the Associate degree.
  • Lead to a specialization or support a major in the international field as they pursue a Bachelor’s degree.
  • List on their resume of educational achievements.

Requirements: The certificate requires fifteen college credits, which should include one foreign language course taught in the language and at least one course from each of the following categories:

History and Culture (at least one course from this category)

  • ANT 100: General Anthropology

  • ANT 200: Cultural Anthropology

  • ANT 204: Cultures of the World

  • ANT 250: Women in Cross-Cultural Perspectives

  • GEO 101: Introduction to Cultural Geography

  • GEO 110: World Regional Geography

  • HIS 106: History of Western Civilization

  • HIS 120: Europe and the Modern World, 1815 to the Present

  • HIS 213: Recent Latin America

  • HIS 214: History of Russia

  • SOC 270: Introduction to World Populations

  • WOM 250: Women in Cross-Cultural Perspectives

Politics and Economics (at least one course from this category)

  • ECO 203: Economics-Macro

  • POL 106: Comparative Politics of Major Nation

  • POL 275: International Politics

  • BUS: Introduction to International Business, under development

Literature, Philosophy, Art and Music (at least one course from this category)

  • ENG 269: International Literature after 1750

  • ENG 273: Studies in International Literature

  • ENG 275: Twentieth Century Novels of the World

  • PHI 201: Asian Philosophy

  • ART 187: Survey: Modern Art

  • ART 188: Survey: Modern Architecture and Design

  • MUS 295: Special topics: World Music

The above courses plus a foreign language are intended to give the student an increased knowledge of foreign cultures, countries, and issues. Their emphasis is international, rather than domestic (the United States).

Capstone course: Ask your academic advisor or the person listed below if your campus hosts a capstone interdisciplinary (IS) course, which helps students integrate their various courses while analyzing contemporary world problems.

Co-curricular offerings: Students participating in the International Studies Certificate program are encouraged to attend and participate in campus activities such as international films, music, theater, and guest speakers that enhance the international perspectives learned in the classroom. An international club or foreign language clubs may be available on your campus as well.

Study abroad: Students working toward the International Studies Certificate, as well as others, are encouraged to plan their academic careers to include a study abroad experience. The UW Colleges has its own study abroad program and those courses will be included in the above categories so that they count toward the 15 credit requirements.
