Distance Education Classes

The UW Colleges Distance Education program provides access and expanded course offerings to students. Computer proficiency, especially in the use of e-mail and the Internet are necessary to complete most classes.  Students are asked to complete an orientation and skills screening prior to the start of each semester. Distance Education courses may not be audited.

Four different modes of access are available, including:

  • Online (ONL)
    • Visit: www.online.uwc.edu for complete course information.
    • In UWC online courses, students and faculty interact with each other as class members - totally over the Internet. Instructional courseware utilizes web pages, discussion groups and UWC email. Online courses do not meet at a particular time or place, but they are structured within the academic semester time frame and require class participation several times each week. These courses have different tuition, fees and payment requirements.
    • See online tuition information for tuition charges associated with online courses. It is the student's responsibility to access this site for specific information including all online course schedules, deadlines, and payment information.
  • Wisline Web (WLW) links an audio connection with common web-based courseware. This enables faculty and students to converse while interacting with each other's documents and graphics in a real time classroom setting. Note: There is a per credit technology fee for all WLW courses.
  • Compressed video (CV) utilizes audio, computer, and video connections simultaneously. This enables faculty and students to converse and interact with each other's coursework while viewing each other in a real time classroom setting. Note: There is a per credit technology fee for all CV courses.
  • Computer-Based Training (CBT) courses are delivered to students on a course website in modules from CD-ROMS. Students complete the modules, submit their homework and correspond with the instructor via UWC email.

Textbooks for all Distance Education Courses (except CBT courses) are available for purchase from MBS Direct Online Bookstore. Their website is: http://direct.mbsbooks.com/uwcolleges.htm or call toll-free at 1-800-325-3252.

Tuition & Fees for Online Courses:
UWC Online course tuition, fees, payment requirements, and payment schedules differ from all other UWC campus requirements. Additionally, an administrative/technology fee is charged for each online course. This fee is refundable through the last day of online registration. Your seat in the course is not secure until your online tuition is paid in full or, if you are a UWC degree seeking student, UW Colleges confirms that you have adequate financial aid to cover your online tuition in full. If you fail to meet this requirement, you will be removed from your course(s) when the course is full or at the close of online registration.

Dropping Online Courses
UWC online courses do not follow an add-drop schedule. Once online registration closes, students may drop but not add. Once the semester begins, UWC online follows the institution-wide UWC drop policy and calendar. Complete information is available at www.online.uwc.edu.  Note that non-attendance does NOT constitute a drop for online courses. You MUST complete the drop process.
